A Relic Orb.

Relics are collectible items that give aid to the Ember Knights in a run. There are 118 Relics in the game. Relics can be obtained via the Relic room (Found near the start of a run and near the end), the Relic Selector, the start of Wightsbury, and Arlan's Shop.

Unlocking Relics

Players do not begin the game with all Relics unlocked. Many Relics must be obtained through the use of Relic Orbs. Relic Orbs can be dropped in a run after defeating a certain amount of enemies. The amount of enemies that must defeated before gaining another Relic Orb is shown above Esper in the Nexus. There are 53 Relic Orbs in the game. The color of the relic orb once dropped corresponds to the relic's rarity. Some Relics may not be obtained via Relic Orbs, but instead are unlocked through Secrets.

Relic Selector

The Relic Selector

The Relic Selector can be encountered as a reward at the end of a room. When opened, the Relic Selector will let players select a Relic from 3 randomly rolled choices. Players who have Expanded Relic Selector selected in Slot 8 of the Ember Tree will be able to choose from 4 options instead. Players who have Extra Starting Relic selected in Slot 8 of the Ember Tree will be allowed to choose two relics in the first Relic Selector.

Buying Relics

Relics can be bought in Arlan's shop. Arlan's in-run shop sells relics in exchange for gold, at a starting price in area 1 of 75, 150, 225, or 300 gold, depending on the value of a relic. The value of a relic is not always tied to its rarity- the starting price in gold for each relic is listed in the table below. The price of a relic in gold increases by 50 gold per area, for a max of a 200 gold increase in area 5.

Arlan's shop in the nexus sells relics for ember, for either 200, 300, 400, or 600 ember per relic. The price in ember is directly correlated to its area 1 price in gold. The relic Discount Card cannot be bought in Arlan's in-run shop, but it can be bought in Arlan's Nexus shop for 400 ember.

Upgrading Relics

If a relic has already been picked up by the Knight but appears again later in the run, the Knight can choose to take the relic a subsequent time in order to upgrade its effects. This does not take up an additional slot in the player's inventory. Relics that can be upgraded will have a green Lv.1 next to their rarity while in a run. Some relics can be upgraded multiple times, listed below (work in progress). Starting in area 4, the Knight will also gain access to Arlan's Refinement Shop. Instead of being able to buy new items, they can purchase upgrades for any of the upgradeable relics currently in their inventory until they run out of gold or all of their relics are at max level.

Boons

At the start of Wightsbury, if the cutscene has not been triggered before, Praxis will appear and create four podiums with a Boon sitting upon each. There are a total of 12 Boons, with each run having randomized selection. Each one has 1 negative 'Cursed' effect and 1 positive 'Cleansed' effect. Ember knights must play through the entire Wightsbury level and beat Phantom in order to fully 'Cleanse' the relic, which will remove the negative effect and leave the positive one. Ember knights can each hold 1 cursed Boon, but are not required to take one. Four Boons will also randomly be generated at the start of Akamura.

Cleansing a Boon for the first time will unlock it in the compendium. Noteably, even though cursed Boons are counted towards the total relic amount at the bottom of the compendium, they do not have a separate slot for the cursed sprite.

Wrath of the Architect DLC Content

The DLC package adds 10 new relics to find through relic orbs, 4 new Boons, and 4 new relics to find through defeating bosses. The DLC relics are highlighted in teal within the list below.
